BIOGRAPHY OF TARIK AHMED BAKER AL-HASHIMI VICE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF IRAQ

A descendant of a well known Upper Middle Class Sunni Arab family Born in one of Baghdad’s -the Iraqi Capital- famous historic neighborhoods, in 1942.

Al-Hashimis are known for their active participation in building the State of Iraq since its declaration in 1921. The great uncles of Mr Tariq Alhashimi (Iraq’s VP) have assumed several leading positions – Minister of Defense and Prime Minister – have been occupied by Alhashimis for several successive tenures.

Some highlights of Alhashimi’s education and qualifications: Was registered for a PhD in Economy at Plymouth University, but denied it due to the Gulf War, granted a Masters Degree in Sciences of Economy by Baghdad University, as well as several training courses in Military Arts & Science.

Some highlights of Mr Alhashimi’s professional life: Staff General in the Iraqi Army, joined the Military University in 1959 & graduated in 1962 as a Second Lieutenant .
Left the Military Service in 1975 -as a Staff Lieutenant Colonel- when his last post was a lecturer at the Iraqi University of General Staff & Command, .
From 1979 untill 1991 Alhashimi left Iraq to be the Director of Middle East Section at the United Arab Navigation Company in Kuwait. In 1991 returned to Iraq where he’s lived since.

Found himself in the Iraqi Islamic Party, a conviction affirmed due to the extensive follow-up of the Parties approaches & stands since 1960, highly impressed by the moderate ideology of that particular Social & Political Entity, hence adopted its Political Identity & advanced step by step untill elected by the Islamic Party’s Shoura Council to be the Chairman in 2004, marking the beginning of a new era, whereby the Islamic Iraqi Party influenced the overall Iraqi Political Platform due to decisive measures undertaken, amongst the most prominent decisions was the active and massive participation of a major fraction of the Iraqi Community in the political process after a long boycott and a bloody course, in addition to accepting the constitution based on the condition of a comprehensive revision to amend the several Articles of that Constitution according to an Article added at the last minute & became known as Article 142.

The ultimate sacrifice was the dear price of those bold stands, for Alhashimi suffered the tragic loss of two of his own brothers & his own sister at the alter of Building the New Iraq, paying the Price of the Stands that aimed to Bring Stability & Prosperity to Iraq.

After the General Elections in late 2005 Alhashimi was the Candidate of Altawafoq Front – a Political Electoral Slate – of which he is a leading figure, to assume the post of the Vice President of the Republic of Iraq & was elected by the Iraqi Parliament & as such became the Vice President as of April 2006, as well as Chairing the Iraqi Islamic Party, the Political Entity that he found to materialize his aspirations to build a modern state that Iraqis have longed to establish
